Port of Calais

The Port of Calais is located in the northern part of the city, directly connected to the French motorway network. Today the crossing to the English port of Dover takes around 75 minutes, but Captain Stuart Townsend created the first ferry able to transport cars across the English Channel in 1928, with a ship named the "Artificer" ship. The vehicles were put on top of the ship with cranes and traffic rapidly increased ever since, and just over 10 million passengers currently pass through the port each year; making Calais the busiest car ferry port on mainland Europe. There is a range of services available at the passenger terminal, including, ticket offices for car ferry companies, a cashpoint, bureau de change, car hire, a bar, a restaurant, showers and toilets. Since November 2016 they have installed a free Wi-Fi service, which covers all cross-channel ports and waiting areas.

How to get to the ferry terminal

The train station, Gare de Calais Ville, is just over 3km from the ferry terminal and around a 40-minute walk. There is also public transport to the ferry port thanks to buses that leave regularly and take around 30 to 40 minutes. From July 1st to August 31st, a company called Sitac sets up an on-demand shuttle bus service to connect the centre to the ferry terminal.

If you're travelling by car, then the passenger terminal is very well signposted and only around 15 minutes from the centre of town. The nearest airport is Lille Airport, which has international and domestic flights and is about 98 km from the centre of Calais.
