Exploring Sardinia with Netferry

If you are planning an autumn trip with your children, NetFerry has an extraordinary destination in mind for you and your family! Today we set sail for Sardinia, an island in the beautiful Mediterranean sea with a surprisingly varied landscape. You have everything from rustic mountain villages to lively coastal towns, not to mention the fantastic food.

September welcomes the beginning of autumn, the crowds of tourists begin to leave, and the heat becomes a little more forgiving, making it the perfect time of year to visit Sardinia. NetFerry advises you to live an unusual experience with your children in Sardinia.  Well served by ferries connecting to mainland Italy, once you arrive into one of the ports, head inland to the colourful mountains with your family for an unusual and unforgettable experience.

The period after the summer, when in the past, the cattle returned to their stables, is characterised by festivities.  Today, there are still towns and villages in the Sardinian hills where these ancient traditions and customs are still alive, so it's a great time of year to visit with your family thanks to the joyful and festive atmosphere. The whole family can get involved in the smiles, traditional songs, dances and food that accompany the return of the cattle.

The festivities usually occur for around five days at the very end of September, and the beginning of November and the name of the festival is Tramudas, in Sardinian. In the past, this time of year was when the shepherds prepared for the long journey back, with their leather bags full of cheese and bread. The paths of their autumn migration are still present on the ancient landscape, scattered with buildings called Pinnettos and Cuiles, that sheltered the shepherds along the way. These huts made of brick and wood represent a type of pastoral architecture constructed with skill and diligence. In the area between Baronie and Montalbo, in northern Sardinia, take the road and mule track to Cuile Orthoruta, and you'll find plenty of Ortohruta Pinnettos, restored in 2009 for development of tourism.

In Biancone, in the middle of the island, Netferry recommends a visit to Funtanamela forest. The trails through the woods are fascinating for both adults and children, full of natural, cultural and historical things to discover such as old threshing floors and lime kilns, pinnettos, cuiles and ancient fences another surprise is always around the corner! You may even come across herds of horses or catch sight of a Sardinian deer; there is also the Bau Onu waterfall. Path number 263, known as Su Lau, goes to the heart of Sardinia, and there is a magnificent Pinnetto along the way, known as Genna and' Teula, an ancient hut hidden in the forest!
