Guide of Golfo Aranci

Golfo Aranci is a really interesting town on the northern coast of Sardinia. It owes its name to misinterpretation, as it is said that in the 20th century some cartographers understood the name as 'Gulfu di li Ranci', ie 'Gulf of the Crabs', therefore it became Golfo Aranci.

History

The history in the town goes back to the Nuraghic era, as evidenced by the sacred well of Milis dating back to the seventh century BC. At the time the town was under the Romans and it became an important port for the Empire. In the twentieth century, it became inhabited by shepherds, coming from the inner lands stretching out to the coast. The sea here is particularly rich in fish which allowed the development of the fishing sector.

Places to visit

There is a granite statue to visit, which is dedicated to Marconi who carried out experiments here, the Colonna di Luce. There are also ancient remains and archaeological artefacts in Golfo Aranci, such as the sacred well of Mili that was certainly used by boats for water supply. The oldest church in the town is San Giuseppe located near the port it is a simple church. Be sure to also take a stroll in the old village amongst the little houses and the narrow streets.

Beaches

There are some strips of fine golden sand with crystal clear water near the town known as Five Beaches. There is Spiaggia Bianca which is the most beautiful, where fine sand and rocks alternate. It is close to Cala Sassari and Cala Banana. Another nice beach with little rock pools is Bahia de Bahas.
