Virtù Ferries is a Maltese shipping company that has been operating a high-speed ferry service between Sicily and Malta since 1988. It is part of Virtu Holdings, a wholly Maltese, family-owned group with roots in maritime transport dating back to 1945.
The main route is Pozzallo – Valletta (Grand Harbour), running year-round with over 1,000 return crossings per year. At a cruising speed of 38 knots, the crossing takes approximately 90 minutes. The service caters to both passengers — with well-established day-return excursions in both directions — and commercial traffic, with a daily exchange of fresh produce between the two islands. The company carries over 300,000 passengers and 70,000 vehicles on this route each year.
The operating vessel is the M/V Saint John Paul II, delivered by Incat Tasmania in 2019: 110.6 metres in length, with a capacity of 900 passengers and 167 vehicles (or 23 heavy goods vehicles across 490 metres of lane space). It received the Significant Ship 2018 notation from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and was named Ship of the Year 2020 in the High-Speed Ferry category by Cruise and Ferry Review. On board, six passenger lounges spread across two decks, designed on the basis of nearly three decades of passenger feedback. The standby vessel is the M/V Jean De La Valette, built by Austal Ships in Western Australia, with a capacity of 800 passengers and 156 vehicles.
The entire fleet sails under the Maltese flag and is managed in-house by the company's marine technical department.
