Guide of Casamicciola (Ischia)

Ischia is an island that belongs to the Flegree islands in the Gulf of Naples. The island is shaped like a trapeze and is the peak of Mount Epomeo, a submerged volcano that sunk millions of years ago. In ancient times it was called Pithekoussai and to the Latins, Aenaria. Ischia was already inhabited in the Neolithic period and the island suffered many incursions and threats from the Barbarians. It was then under the Normans, the Swabians, the Angevins and the Aragonese. The island is divided into six municipalities, Ischia, Barano d'Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio and Serrara Fontana.

What to visit

Ischia is divided into two parts: Ischia Ponte, which is the historic center full of ancient alleys and shops, and Ischia Porto, the small fishing village. Ischia has some very interesting sites from a historical and architectural point of view. For example, the Aragonese Castle which was built in 474 BC by the tyrant, Gerone of Syracuse. The fortress rises on a rock on the eastern side of the island. The  Cathedral of the Assumption has a crypt containing Giotto's frescoes. And do not miss the Mortella, the garden created by the wife of the English composer William Walton. It owes its name to the plant of the divine myrtle, which grows on the rocks on the hill that the Lady Walton Museum-Garden is located.

Beaches

The island is rich in spas and springs which have been used since ancient times. The Cava Grado Beach on the south coast is sandy and full of services and accommodation. Plus the view from the coast is really impressive and the beach is ideal for families with children because of the sandy and shallow beach. Sorgeto beach, in Sorgeto bay on the west coast, is a rocky beach which has natural spas on the beach, from which hot water flows and natural mud spa. The San Montano Beach is beautiful, with light sand, it is crescent-shaped and surrounded by greenery. There are all types of service there and it is particularly suitable for children offering crystalline sea with sandy beach area.
