Guide of Capri

The island of Capri is located in the Gulf of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The island is of karst origin and was once joined to the Sorrento Peninsula but it broke off and became an island.

What to visit

In Capri, there is Capri and Anacapri, the two communities that have always been in conflict to defend their rights. In ancient times the island was already a sought-after summer residence for poets, writers and famous people and today it offers coves and beautiful sea but also several sites of artistic and cultural interest. For example, the residence of Emperor Tiberius - Villa Jovis, built on the promontory to the east of the island which looks like a Roman villa but also a small fortress. The Certosa di San Giacomo, is the oldest building on Capri and is today home to a museum and a concert hall that was once divided into three blocks, one outside for convent life with a pharmacy and church for women, the second for the friars and for the external guests with the barns and stables and a third building for the cloistered life that develops around the Great Cloister and the Small Cloister. The gardens of Augustusare are terraces that are overlooking the Faraglioni and the Bay of Marina Piccola.

Faraglioni

The coast of the island of Capri is indented and with numerous caves and coves, in Anacapri one of the must-see destinations is the Blue Grotto, a 60-meter-long luminous natural cavity that have been described in various famous literary works. The three stacks that jut into the sea are the Faraglioni and they create a very special scenographic effect, each stack has a name: the first is called 'star' and is joined to the earth, the second is separated from the first by a stretch of sea and is called 'faraglione' and the third is the 'outside' or 'scopolo', ie head or promontory onto the sea.
