The island of Leros is a little jewel in the heart of the Dodecanese archipelago. The town of Agia Marina is located in the northwest part of the island, in an important natural harbour at the foot of a green hill.

A brief history of Agia Marina

The history of Agia Marina has been shaped by the multiple invasions on the island over the centuries. This began with the Persians, followed by the Athenians, Spartans and the Ottomans. In the early 1900s, Italy briefly tried to invade the territory between Greece and Turkey, reaching Agia Marina. Then during the Second World War, the Italian armed forces were based on the island, which was subsequently heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe.

What to visit

Agia Marina is full of little streets and white buildings with blue doors and windows in the classic Greek style, there are also noble houses and Italian-style buildings amongst this. It is a picturesque village with a wide range of bars, cafes and restaurants to enjoy the peaceful, romantic atmosphere. Of particular interest, is the Byzantine Fortress of Brouzi, the archaeological collection in the museum and the church of Christ the Savior and the Holy Cross.

Agia Marina beach is sandy and bathed by crystal clear waters. It is quite popular and busy and has all of the services that tourists could need. Agia Marina beach is situated in a beautiful natural bay with crystal clear waters and is the longest beach on the island, it has been awarded a blue flag.
