Family holidays in Malta with NetFerry!

Today we explore Malta, an island of variety! A plethora of cultures have settled this place for millennia. Its the melting pot of the Med and this is still evident today through the unique mix of architecture, food and people. There is also plenty to do, from exploring prehistoric temples, fossil-studded cliffs, hidden coves, to thrilling scuba diving. But today we are focussing on activities for you and your kids, Malta is surprisingly kid-friendly, and there's more than enough to keep the whole family occupied.

For kids who love animals

The Ta' Qali Petting Farm is a great place to visit with kids who love animals. They can even feed the llamas, goats, sheep and rabbits. Be sure to also visit the aviary, full of colourful birds like cockatiels, parakeets, budgies, finches, guinea fowl, pheasants and even an emu! The Dreams of Horses Farm in Xagħra, Gozo provides horse riding classes for kids. It is located close to Ramla l-Ħamra bay and there is the opportunity to ride horses on the beach! There are plenty of other farm animals including ponies, horses, donkeys, goats and sheep too! The Malta Falconry Centre in Siġġiewi offers exciting tours of the centre, along with guided instructions on how to interact with the birds of prey, as well as daily shows. If you want to go 'all-out', then head to the Mediterraneo Marine Park Malta in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and give your children the gift of swimming with dolphins! A truly unforgettable experience!

For budding scientists

Natural Museum of Natural History in Mdina, located in an 18th-century palace renovated by Grandmaster De Vilhena in 1726, explores Malta's geology and palaeontology. There are various exotic mammals, marine fauna, insects, shells, birds in exhibitions that explain evolution. It's not the most modern museum around, but it could be a pleasant visit for kids interested in flora and fauna. Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Kalkara was the first interactive Science Centre in Malta. There are over 200 exhibits, hands-on workshops and exciting science shows here to engage and educate your little ones. The Planetarium, one of the latest additions, is also fascinating for the whole family!

For mini historians

Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu, tells the story of Malta's historical link to the navy, from its very first settlers, who landed here via sea. This museum helps your kids understand the importance of Malta's strategic position in the Mediterranean. Malta 5D in Valletta, is a highly entertaining attraction, telling the story of Malta's past with visual, audio and sensory effects, this one is best for older children or teenagers.

For little daredevils!

Buġibba Waterpark in Buġibba is open from July to September and will provide the whole family with entertainment because it's divided into three areas, according to height and age. There are tonnes of different slides, pools and even an inflatable obstacle course! Popeye Village in Anchor Bay is one of the oldest theme parks in Malta, located on the set of the 1980 movie, Popeye, starring Robin Williams. The Splash and Fun Water park in Naxxar is another good shout if you are looking for bigger slides. Finally, after all of that excitement, if your kids need to chill out and quietly play, take them straight to the Playmobil Fun Park in Birżebbuġa. Made by the makers of Playmobil, this place features indoor and outdoor castles, pirate, princess and police-themed play areas. Let them play while you enjoy the peace and quiet.

...or just a simple day on the beach

Mellieħa Bay is the biggest sandy beach in Malta; there are loads of water activities such as jet-skiing and paddle boats. The water remains quite shallow quite far out, so it's ideal for little kids. Armier Bay, located in the North of Malta is, in fact, two beaches; Armier and Little Armier Bay, both are family-friendly, clean and safe with very shallow water. Golden Bay is probably one of the most accessible beaches in Malta along with Mellieħa Bay. It has a lot of facilities, including a few restaurants and is situated close to the village of Manikata. It is one of the few beaches that remain open into the evening, as beach parties and late-night barbeques give it that chilled summer vibe.
