Discover Montenegro with NetFerry: the wild heart of the Balkans

With five national parks, one of the last virgin forests in Europe, rivers, lakes and, of course, a beautiful coastline, Montenegro is a paradise for outdoorsy types. Montenegro offers visitors varied landscapes: jagged coastlines, fjords, small islands, mountains and pristine forests. 'Wild Beauty' is the slogan Montenegro uses for its marketing campaign, and we think it is really appropriate!

Scutari Lake and National Park: a microcosm in the heart of the Balkans

Scutari is the biggest lake on the Old Continent, which Montenegro shares with its neighbour Albania, part of the Scutari National Park. Because of the diverse landscape, it is considered a microcosm of Mediterranean beauty. Ancient villages, small islands, abandoned fortresses, old monasteries and hidden beaches make the lake a fascinating place, not to be missed!

The best way to enjoy this place is by booking onto one of the many boat trips from Virpazar. During the boat excursion, you will have the chance to spoil yourself with deserted beaches, dive into the lake's crystal water and enjoy good food surrounded by a magical atmosphere. Make sure your excursion includes a hike up the hill known as the 'green pyramid' at the bend of the river Rjieka Crnojevica, on the northern side of the lake.

Durmitor National Park: heaven for outdoor sports

Durmitor National Park makes you feel like you have been catapulted into a different dimension; there are glaciers, rivers, creeks, glacial lakes (like Crno Jezero, or the 'black lake') and a black pine forest. From December to March, the Durmitor is a paradise for skiers, with more than 30 kilometres of slopes and 22 ski lifts. In the summer, both locals and tourists visit the park for hiking, climbing, mountain bike trips, rafting in the rivers and hiking.

If you are up for some adrenaline while in the park, we recommend you visit the Tara Canyon, which at 1300 metres deep, it is the second deepest canyon in the world. While you are here, you must try a rafting excursion. The landscapes from here are simply breathtaking, especially with the succession of rock cliffs reflecting on the crystal clear water together with the impressive backdrop of the Dinaric Alps!

295 kilometres of coastal beauty

Despite its relatively small coastline, Montenegro has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, each with their own unique character and feel. In Petrovac, you will find crystal waters and golden sand. It is a beautiful beach but can be busy during the summer months for both tourists and locals.

If you are looking for a more secluded and quiet beach head towards Dobrec. This beach is only accessible by boat, situated in a secluded cove it offers tourists a little slice of paradise. The clear waters and pebble beach make you feel like you're on a desert island! For more picture-postcard landscapes, try Kotor Bay, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Surrounded by high mountains and seven small islands, the bay was described by Lord Byron as "the most beautiful encounter between land and sea".
